Utica (19-5) defeated Watkins Memorial (12-15) 3-2 in
Division II Tournament play Saturday in a continuation of a game suspended on
Friday. Utica was leading 3-2 in the top of the seventh when paly was
suspended and Watkins had a runner on first with no outs.
When plays resumed Saturday Rob French was on the mound in
relief of Utica starter Dan Wheeler. On the first pitch thrown to
pinch hitter Tye Howard, Utica cather picked Watkins' Gregg Morrison off first
base. French then struck out Howard. After waliking Sean Dudley he enticed
KC Weber to fly out to centerfield to end the game and pick up his thrid save
of the season.
Utica scored one run in the third inning on singles by Nick
Joseph, Carter Rowley and an infield out by Charley Rowley which scored
Joseph. Watkins scored an unearned run in the fourth inning
on singles by Justin Ferrell, Jeremy Bird and Nathan
Weisenstein. Ferrel was picke third base by Wohlford but Bird scored on a
passed ball. Utica scored two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by
Shane Conners and Joseph. The Warriors scored their final run
in the fifth on a double by KC Weber and a run-scoring single by Randy Roberty.
Wheeler (8-1) picked up the win for Utica. He
allowed one earned run, nine hits, struck out five and walked two in six
innings of work. Watkins starter Eric Arnett took the loss.
Arnett allowed three earned runs, seven hits, struck out seven and walked none
in six inninings.
Nick Joseph had two singles and one RBI and Wohlford had two
singles for Utica. Roberty and Ferrell had two hits each for
Watkins. Weber had a double.
