Utica Splits Doubleheader with Newark Catholic 4-7 and 3-2

Nick Joseph's double in the top of the ninth scored Bobby Phillips who doubled to lead off the inning to give Utica (11-3, 6-0) the win against Newark Catholic (10-2) during the second game of a double header Saturday.  Utica tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth inning on a Joe McGuire double, a Dan Wheeler sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single by Phillips.   Newark Catholic scored their two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Cody Sanborn and an infield out by Tyler Moore.  Newark Catholic threatened in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and one out.  Utica brought in Dan Wheeler who enticed Trent Nutter to ground into an inning-ending double play. Phillips went back to the mound in the eighth and was relieved by Wheeler again with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.  Wheeler got the save when he enticed Trent Nutter again to ground into a game ending force play at second.

Wheeler picked up the save, his first of the year.  Trent Nutter took the loss in relief.  Michael Taylor pitched eight innings and got a no-decision.   Taylor gave up nine hits, struck out fourteen and walked three.

In Game One --- Newark Catholic jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the first four innings and never looked back until Utica made it interesting, scoring three runs in the seventh.   Jason Hess, Howard and Eisenbach each hit solo home runs off Utica starter Joe McGuire (0-1).   Howard had two hits including his homer; Trent Nutter had a double and R. Nutter had two singles for the Green Wave.
